Create beautiful graphs with Prototype and ProtoChartWritten by Uwe on June 06, 2011
However, in the end we decided that it would be better to first try out some third party solutions as it saves a lot of time and hassle. They are also proven to work by lots of other developers who use them, which is always good when trying to reduce error messages at the start of a new website.
We especially looked into two solutions:
Open Flash Chart is definitely the more developed of the two. It runs with the support of Flash. So if you have a lot of visitors who do not have Flash (e.g. IPhone, IPad users), this might not be the best solution for you. We also encountered some problems when using Invoiceberry with Internet Explorer as the report pages always loaded very slowly when Open Flash Chart was used. Unfortunately we did not find a bug fix for that, so we decided to give the second software a try…
ProtoChart is unfortunately not being developed any more, but as we use the Prototype library anyway, we decided to give it a try. As it turned out, Prototype is exactly what we wanted. Lightweight, uncomplicated and quick to implement. As we are happy with bar charts, pie charts and some other basic charts, we do not really mind that the development of the software finished. If bug fixes or new features are needed we might just work on it ourselves as the code is very clear and well written.
Please leave a comment or e-mail us if you have any problems with implementing ProtoChart.
